Motion sickness is real. You can get it traveling by car, boat or plane. It can ruin any trip if you let it. It is caused by excessive stimulation of the apparatus, located in the ear, that maintains equilibrium. The symptoms of nausea and dizziness can last for several hours after the trip is over. Here are some tips to prevent motion sickness:

Rapid accelerations and decelerations and windy or bumpy roads can upset the delicate balance in the inner ear. The eye transmits messages to the inner ear mechanism that creates equilibrium. So for example, if the eyes are reading a book and the car ride is bumpy and swervy the messages are contradictory, resulting in motion sickness.

The symptoms of motion sickness usually start with uneasiness or discomfort. Then, the person will begin to look pale and green. They will soon feel dizzy or have a headache. Motion sickness can quickly turn into nausea and vomiting. The symptoms can last well after a trip is over.

Motion sickness is easier to prevent then to cure. A little planning in advance of a trip is a good idea. If you are prone to motion sickness, while riding in a car keep your head still or lay on a pillow. To avoid an imbalance in the inner ear focus on a point in the far distant horizon. The horizon appears to remain still and this will help maintain balance. Sit where you can get air blown into your face. Open a window or turn on the air conditioner.

Another method of prevention is to keep distracted. Entertainment such as, music, a good conversation or a game is a great diversion. Do not read while in a car. If none of this works at preventing motion sickness, taking a Dramamine before a long trip is recommended. Dramamine helps but it can cause drowsiness and a dry mouth. It is best to travel on a full stomach for some people and an empty stomach for others. Determine which is best for you.
