How to Print on Inkjet Transparencies

By J.D. Wollf

  • Overview

Using transparencies is a common way to communicate in the professional world, but you don't have to be a professional printer to create a great-looking presentation with your inkjet printer. Printing transparencies from home or work on an inkjet printer is surprisingly quick and easy. Just remember to buy the correct supplies for your specific inkjet printer and take a few extra steps to keep your transparencies crisp and clean, and you're ready to go.
    • Step 1

Buy the correct type of transparency. There are different types of transparencies for different types of printers. Make sure to buy inkjet transparencies, not transparencies designed for laser printers or photocopiers. You will also have a choice between transparencies designed for black-and-white and color inks.
    • Step 2

Check your printer to see if it has an ink-drying heater. If it doesn't, you may want to print transparencies one at a time, and feed some extra plain paper through the printer after each transparency to remove any stray ink.

    • Step 3

Load your transparencies. Make sure you load them with the correct side face up. You may also have to change the paper thickness settings or feed transparencies one at a time.
    • Step 4

Print transparencies. If you don't have an automatic ink dryer, lay each transparency face-up on a flat surface to make sure it doesn't curl. To prevent smudging, keep your fingers away from the ink and don't put anything on top of the transparency.
    • Step 5

Keep transparencies safe by stacking them with pieces of paper between each transparency sheet. You can also buy transparency sleeves, which provide extra protection and are easy to store.
