Overview
The acne skincare line Proactiv® Solution has licensed its name to a line of makeup. The makeup is not as actively marketed as the skincare line. While promoted with acne-fighting products, not all of the makeup items actually contain active medicating ingredients.
Facts
Proactiv® Solution is a popular skin care system targeted toward acne-prone skin. The company allows others to market the product in mall kiosks and online. There is no mention of makeup on the Proactiv®.com website. When you purchase Proactiv® skin care products, the package contains a brochure that includes makeup. Proactiv® appears to have licensed the use of its name to a makeup line sold on the cable television shopping channel QVC. Direct marketing giant Guthy-Renker sponsors regularly broadcast celebrity testimonial infomercials for the skin-care line, but the makeup is not included in those broadcasts. The official website for Guthy-Renker markets different makeup lines, but not the Proactiv® makeup.
History
Board certified dermatologists Drs. Katie Rogan and Kathy Fields introduced the highly successful Proactiv® Solution acne skin-care products in 1995. They have since moved on and actually offer an acne line called Unblemished on their website. All their focus appears to be on their new products, not the Proactiv® line. They don't offer makeup in the new line.
Function
Proactiv® Solution makeup is listed as "medicated." It has the same benzoyl peroxide ingredient found in the skin cleanser, renewing lotion and other products. The active ingredients are commonly used to treat acne. The amounts in the products are the same you can find over-the-counter at your local drug store at much cheaper prices. The QVC website offers mixed reviews of the makeup products from customers. Proponents cite the sheer finish, but critics don't like the limited shades available.
Types
Proactiv® Solutions' makeup line includes: Medicated concealer, sheer finish pressed powder, sheer tint moisturizer, sheer finish foundation compact, and loose powder. The prices range from $17.75 to $26.25 plus shipping and handling on QVC.com. Online auction sites offer various pricing and some bulk orders.
Considerations
While the Proactiv® Solution skin-care line has an automatic reorder program that mails products to customers on a regular basis, the makeup is by specific order only. It is difficult to try the makeup before buying it due to the telephone and online distribution methods.
Misconceptions
Not all of the makeup has active acne-fighting ingredients. The concealer is listed as "medicated" containing benzoyl peroxide, and the compact foundation has salicylic acid. The other items don't list any medications. The makeup is listed as "sheer", "noncomedogenic" (won't clog pores), and "oil-free", which are better for acne prone skin. The moisturizer is the only item that has a sunscreen, SPF 15.
