If the number of plants, the number of fish, the amount of water in circulation are in balance with each other, you get this little fur coat carpet on the sides. That is actually healthy for a pond. It should not get any longer than about an inch, and it is a real pretty fur coat.


Now that scummy pond stuff that floats on the surface is a sign that there are too many nutrients in the water. It's a sign there is too much organic matter in the water. And it is just like it is in the ocean. You may need a bigger filter.




The Algae is going to bloom, and it is part of the cycle. If you just wait six to eight weeks, it usually settles down on its own in the water. It is clear, and the string Algae now goes away.

Now, do not use algaecides. I had seen algaecides kill pond plants. It is after all an herbicide. I have seen it kill fish, because it drastically drops the oxygen level in the water. The fish suffocate.
