How To Promote Your Home Business

Tips on promoting and marketing your home business to get noticed and sell products and services.

Once you start your own home based business, you'll soon find that you'll need to promote, promote, promote. Otherwise, how are you going to find clients and get the word out that you have services and/or products for sale?

Letting the world know about your business doesn't have to be costly either. In fact, there are several ways you can advertise for virtually free. Take for example publishing a news release. Many times, local newspapers will publish articles about new businesses that open up in their area. One of these news releases can be yours! Simply write up an informational article about your business. Be sure to include the essential Who? What? Where? When? and How? If you have a photo of yourself, clip it to the article and send it off to every local newspaper in your city.

Another idea to promote your home business is to advertise it on the Internet, especially if you have a website. Many classified web sites will allow you to post an ad for free. Or, you can arrange to link up your home page with other web pages that are similar in nature. You can also get your web site listed for free in search engines like Google and Yahoo, for example.

You can also use your telephone to make "cold calls." First, compile a list of at least fifty people or businesses that you could do work for. Then, call them and announce your new home business. Since people are busy, keep your call brief. But, try to make an appointment with the person in charge so you can talk to them face to face and give them further details.

If you have a computer, printer, and a word processing program, you can also make up professionally looking cards for your home business. Give your business cards out to everyone you know. Visit other local businesses (not your competitors, though) and ask if you can leave a pile of cards there by the cash register so their customers can take one. Also, include a business card in all of your written correspondence.

You can also get involved in your community and promote your home business at the same time. Join community clubs and groups and take a stack of your business cards with you every time you attend a meeting or event. When you introduce yourself, be sure to give each person a card. Briefly tell them what you do and what you can do for them.

Have a magnetic sign made up that lists at least your business name and telephone number. If you can think of a catchy slogan that will let people know what you do, you can add that too. Attach the magnetic sign to the side of your vehicle and use it as advertising every time you travel.

When you get a new customer, offer them a small discount on the work you're going to do if they will provide you with a list of ten names of prospective customers. Or, offer them a small gift in return for the list.

Finally, as you go through your day-to-day activities, keep your eyes open for other opportunities where you can advertise and promote your home business. The more places you advertise, the better results you can expect.
