What is the proper etiquette for collecting an autograph for a sports collector? Choosing an appropriate time to ask for an autograph is the key for any sports collector. I think it's always best to get...
I think it's always best to get them at a time where they are expecting it and are ready. If you catch them when they are expecting it usually they will sign a few things like a program or a photograph. If you are in a situation with them that's one and one, I don't think it would be a problem at all to ask them to sign a bat or something like that. Most of the players these days are a lot more standoffish because there are so many people seeking their time and attention.
There is always the show circuit where a lot of athletes take specific time to go to trade shows or work with companies to get collectors autographs. One thing I do want to stress, if you are an autograph collector, is that you are comfortable with the source that you are purchasing the autograph from. You should always try to get a certificate of authenticity from a source that's well known in the industry and trusted. There are a large percentage of autographs on the market that are not authentic. As a consumer you need to educate yourself and find the authenticators that are well-known and trusted in the industry. You should find the reputable outlets, the sellers and the sources, where you can purchase authentic items. If a deal that you see on some market place or e-bay looks too good to be true, it probably is. Before you jump in to this collectible market, do a little bit of research first and make sure you are buying from someone you can trust. When it comes time to sell part of your collection, the only way you are going to get a good return is if you bought authentic products in the first place.
