The Pros And Cons Of Living In A Cold Climate

If you're planning a move to a cold climate, consider these pros and cons.

Most people can be put into two categories when it comes to weather: winter folks and summer folks. Regardless of the drawbacks - and there are some for both extremes - the level of comfort, energy and all around contentment play an important role in the type of category that you'll fit into. If you're relocating as a result of a job change or some other critical change in your life, and you're transitioning into a cold weather climate, here are some pros and cons for you to consider before moving day.

PRO: People who live in cold climates tend to live longer.

CON: You're much more inclined to become arthritic.

PRO: It's so much easier to breathe cold, crisp air than hot, heavy air.

CON: If you have a history of respiratory problems, bronchitis or pneumonia may haunt you.

PRO: There's nothing quite like watching a snowfall through a window while sipping hot cocoa.

CON: Snow removal can be burdensome, and there are some health risks involved.

PRO: The kids will be thrilled at the possibility of frequent school cancellations due to snow.

CON: In truly snowy climates, there are other options, such as snowmobiles and sleighs.

PRO: The children will have lots of opportunities to build snow forts and have snowball fights.

CON: If the temperature dips too low, you have to be mindful of the possibility of frostbite.

PRO: Everyone always has such beautiful rosy cheeks brought about by the frosty air.

CON: Chapped skin is an ongoing problem. Be prepared with plenty of lip balm.

PRO: The kids look so adorable when they're bundled up in their little snowsuits.

CON: Too many layers of clothing can inhibit the child's ability to move quickly, if need be.

PRO: What could be cozier than sitting before a warm fire on a cold winter's night?

CON: Firewood must constantly be available, which means chopping a lot of wood.

PRO: No need to worry about power outages - folks in cold climates always have generators.

CON: Power outages can be frequent and lengthy. Back-up plans are always necessary!

PRO: You can cuddle up with the family dog to help stay warm through the night.



CON: Animals can cause you to have broken or restless sleep. Keep adequate blankets on hand.

PRO: A cold climate is ideal for those who enjoy skiing and snowboarding.

CON: There are lots of physical hazards involved with these activities. Never go alone.

PRO: Folks in snowy regions are skilled drivers - they're used to driving in ice and snow.

CON: For those who are new to a cold climate, driving can be quite a challenge. Take it slow & easy.

PRO: In a cold climate, you can always look forward to a snowy white Christmas.

CON: If you're planning to travel, or are expecting guests, excessive snow can ruin your plans.

PRO: You can save money by not having to buy clothes for all four seasons.

CON: Winter clothing tends to be more expensive.

PRO: Faraway friends and relatives love the picture of your family laughing and playing in the snow.

CON: You need to gauge the amount of time spent outdoors. Prolonged exposure can be hazardous.

PRO: The extreme cold often kills the germs that would have made you and your family sick.

CON: Extreme cold can pose other health hazards, especially for heart and respiratory patients.

PRO: There are lots of hot, hearty meals that go great with cold weather, such as a good thick stew.

CON: You may find that you have to change your dietary habits to accommodate the weather.

PRO: Houses are very solidly built in snowy regions, in order to accommodate the weather.

CON: Heavy snowfalls can cause damage to the roofing of the house.

PRO: Everyone stays warm outdoors by wearing parkas, ski masks, boots and insulated gloves.

CON: Children need to have distinctive clothing, or they could be mistaken for someone else.

Human beings are adaptable creatures and can pretty much adjust to any changes that need to be made. If you're one of the few who has a real problem with adaptation, you might give it some serious thought before committing to making the change from four seasons to cold climate living. It can be a real challenge - but that can be a positive thing for those with a pioneering spirit.
