Overview
Temper-Pedic is the first company to introduce memory foam technology for consumer use that was developed by NASA. Its mattresses, pillows and cushions utilize a patented formula that was developed by Swedish scientists based on research performed for astronauts. The Temper-Pedic mattress is either loved or hated by consumers; few experience the sleep system without developing a strong opinion of the product.
Types
Tempur-Pedic mattresses come in all sizes and a variety of depths. From twin mattresses to queen and king sizes, the sleep system is recommended by a number of medical societies, including the Arthritis Foundation. The mattress does not require a boxspring, as it is self-contained and sits on a board or platform. The company sells a slim box to lift the mattress from the platform. On the other hand, Tempur-Pedic mattresses cannot be used on standard bed frames, so some kind of support system must be purchased.
Effects
The Tempur-Pedic mattress responds to weight and temperature to form a support system customized to each individual. Hip and shoulder indentations are formed in the top layers of the mattress where needed. Arthritic joints are well supported by the heavy material inside the mattress. People who suffer from back pain and sleep disorders due to physical disabilities may find the Tempur-Pedic solves many of their sleep problems. While the mattress conforms to an individual's body shape, the process takes about 5 to 10 minutes to complete, so comfort is not attained immediately when a person lies down. The indents made in the mattress remain for another 10 minutes or so, depending on how warm the environment is, making turning difficult, as the mattress has to adjust to each new position.
Considerations
The Swedish Tempur-Pedic technology holds heat, requiring fewer blankets and covers. The mattress responds well to body heat, saving on heating costs and eliminating the need for electric heating blankets. At the same time, it is difficult to cool off. Many people find the sleeping arrangement too hot. Overheating can cause sleep interruptions that are difficult to recover from, especially when the sleeper must wait for a new position to be registered by the mattress.
Potential
The Tempur-Pedic mattress comes with one of the best warranties in the industry. Because of the unusual nature of the mattress, the company allows a full refund within 120 days if the customer is unhappy with the product. The 120-day return policy is offered by the manufacturer, but is not extended fully by all retailers. Some retail establishments reduce the policy to 30 days. Most stores will not refund delivery and set-up charges, nor do they offer a return policy on the platform purchased to hold the bed.
Warning
A quick trial in a furniture showroom will not provide customers with the complete Tempur-Pedic experience. Since the company offers a generous commission structure and built-in bonuses for Tempur-Pedic salespeople, most are very accommodating to customers in the store. Plan to spend at least 20 to 30 minutes lying on a mattress to get the full effect of the custom fitting. Roll over a few times and test the response of the material. No test, however, can compare to a full night's sleep on a mattress.
