What are the pros and cons of a wireless home security system? Wireless home security systems have easy installation and cost less than they used to. The pros would certainly include ease of installation,...
The pros would certainly include ease of installation, because there is no wiring required. One of the cons might be the fact that the devices required in many cases are larger than those for hardwired systems. For example, if you are installing a hardwired system and putting a magnet on the door, you are going to bury one side of that magnet in the door and the other side of it into the door jam. If you have a transmitting device, it might be 1.5 x 3 inches long mounted on the door jam. Another con would be that you have to replace batteries, but the system will tell you when you need to do so.
The other thing that a wireless system allows you to do is more easily customize the system after the initial installation. The capabilities are tremendous. For example, if you decide to add a smoke detector and don't have any wires available, you have the choice to get wireless.
The cost differential between a hardwired system and a wireless system has been greatly reduced. Ten years ago it would have been around $300 or $400 in difference where it is probably under a $100 now.
