Overview
Not so long ago, sending or receiving a fax meant owning or finding a fax machine, and paying a dollar per page or more. Now, anyone with an Internet connection and an email account can send and receive messages online, and quite often can do so for free. Here are some ways you can use this technology for your benefit.
-
Step 1
If the fax is no more than three pages, then it can be transmitted for free via faxzero.com. It is not necessary to open an account to do this. -
Step 2
For a longer fax, up to 15 pages , faxzero will charge $1.99 per fax (not per page). This must be paid via PayPal. -
Step 3
Files can be uploaded in .doc or PDF format. When you are receiving an email, the text of the fax will be sent as an attachment to an email message. Simply open it as you would any other attachment. -
Step 4
If you need to access or send even longer faxes, or to use fax services frequently, unityfax.com offers unlimited faxing for $4.99 per month. That's about the typical price of a single fax at most printing outlets and office supply stores. Faxaway, a plan offered by Seattle-based ITL, (k7.net) is only one dollar per month.
- Skill: Easy
- Tip: The companies that provide Internet fax service also often provide voicemail service at a very reasonable rate.
- Warning:
- If you send a free fax via faxzero, an ad will appear on the first page. If this is something that you want to avoid in a particular situation, then you might opt for the paid service instead.
- You can sign up for a fax account without any minimum commitment, but you should be aware that an account may be terminated if it is inactive for 30 days or some other period of time. No problem---just open another one.
