    • Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
    • Step 2

Combine sugar and vegetable shortening in a large mixing bowl. Whip together with the electric mixer.

    • Step 3

Add eggs and beat until thoroughly combined with the electric mixer. This should take approximately 1 to 2 minutes.
    • Step 4

Add flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and vanilla extract to the sugar and egg mixture. Mix well with mixer to form a thick dough.
    • Step 5

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead into a ball. Roll the ball out with a rolling pin to approximately 1/2-inch thick. Cut out cookies using a cookie cutter.
    • Step 6

Place each cookie onto the cookie sheet. Bake cookies in the preheated oven for 10 to 12 minutes, or until they begin to turn a golden color. Do not over bake. Cookies should be soft to the touch when done.
    • Step 7

Remove from oven and allow cookies to cool completely. Transfer to a cookie dish or decorative plate. Top with your icing of choice.
