Step 1
Purchase and install a video capture device to your computer. The easiest route will be to use an external video capture card that connects to your computer through a USB port. Check to see what type of input ports the card has (they will likely be RCA, DVI or VGA).
-
Step 2
Connect the satellite TV receiver to the computer through the video capture card. You may need to use RCA cables (the three-pronged cables with the colored plugs). If you can use a DVI (which has a multi-pin connector and screws to secure it) or VGA cable (a smaller version of DVI), use that as it can improve the video transmission.
-
Step 3
Download and install a software program that will play the satellite TV video onto the computer. Windows Media Encoder may be your best option since it is directly compatible with Media Player. TV Tuner is another possible program.
-
Step 4
Turn on the satellite receiver and open the installed software application. The TV signal should play on the program's video screen. You may have to press the button that opens the link to an external device (the button may have something like a coaxial cable image on it).
-
Step 5
Go to the recording option in your program, like Media Encoder's "Capture Screen" option in the "Wizards" tab. You will now have to make choices like the part of the screen you want recorded, the file name you will save it as and the quality settings. You should get a button to press to begin recording the TV image (in Encoder's case, the "Start Encoding" button on the toolbar).
