How to Refill a Cannon Ink Cartridge

By Catherine Johnson

  • Overview

Purchasing new printer cartridges each time your Canon printer runs out of ink is an expensive and time consuming task. Refilling your ink cartridges is not only easier and more affordable, it also helps the environment by reducing plastic waste and by extending the life of your cartridge. By planning ahead and purchasing bulk printer ink, you will be prepared for the next time your printer runs low on ink.
Make your printer cartridges last longer by refilling the ink.
    • Step 1

Remove the ink cartridge from your Canon printer and place it on paper towels.
    • Step 2

Look at the bottom of the ink cartridge to find a small ink exit hole. Turn the cartridge so that the exit hole is facing up. Insert a few drops of ink into the hole just until the sponge underneath is full.

    • Step 3

Tape over the ink exit hole with the black electrical tape.
    • Step 4

Peel off the printer sticker label and locate the fill hole just under the word "Push." Push in the tiny ball that plugs the hole with the pin or paper clip.
    • Step 5

If you are refilling a black ink cartridge, fill the syringe with 20 cc of ink. If you are refilling a color cartridge, fill the syringe with 15 cc of ink.
    • Step 6

Inject the ink very slowly into the fill hole. Stop when ink starts to come out of the exit hole on the bottom.
    • Step 7

Using the hot wax or glue, reseal the filling hole. The seal should be air tight and level with the surface of the cartridge.
    • Step 8

Remove the electrical tape from the ink exit hole. Hang the cartridge right side up over paper towels for 15 to 30 minutes. Ink will drip out of the exit hole on the bottom. Make sure the cartridge does not directly touch the paper towels.
    • Step 9

Insert the refilled ink cartridge back into your printer.
    • Skill: Moderately Easy
    • Ingredients:
    • Paper towels
    • Black electrical tape
    • Pin or unbent paper clip
    • Syringe
    • Hot wax or glue
    • Refill printer ink
    • Tip: After you refill your cartridge, your Canon printer may not recognize the new ink levels and may not print. For most printers, simply clicking through the error messages will fix the problems. For other Canon printers, you may have to hold the "resume" or "reset" button for about 15 seconds. Your printer should then recognize the new refilled ink levels.
    • Tip: Use soap and warm water to clean up any spills.
