How to Refill Canon Ip3500 Ink Cartridges

By Robert Vaux

  • Overview

The Canon iP3500 is a home printer that retails for about $150. Replacement ink cartridges for it can be expensive. Using an ink refiller kit instead of buying new cartridges can save hundreds of dollars over the course of the printer's life. Learning to refill cartridges is a snap.
    • Step 1

Remove the empty cartridge from the iP3500 printer. Cartridges come in four separate types, each corresponding to a specific color: black, yellow, cyan (blue) and magenta. They are blended during the printing process to create any color required.
    • Step 2

Place the cartridge on top of a piece of newspaper on a countertop. The newspaper will prevent stains in case there's a spill.

    • Step 3

Punch a small hole in the inkwell of the cartridge (the exact placement of the inkwell depends on the precise brand of cartridge you have, but can usually be spotted just by looking at the cartridge). You can do this with the device included in most ink refill kits, or with a household drill fitted with a 3 mm (or smaller) bit. Some cartridges compatible with the iP3500 have an air vent in the inkwell, in which case you can simply use that instead of drilling a hole.
    • Step 4

Take the bottle containing the ink of the pertinent color (black, yellow, cyan or magenta) from the ink refill kit. Attach the included needle to the bottle and then slip it into the hole you made. Slowly fill the inkwell with ink. The ink should be filled at a rate of about 1 ml per second. Most cartridges compatible with the iP3500 hold 13 ml worth of color ink and 26 ml worth of black ink. Many have clips that allow you to monitor the ink levels. Be careful not over-fill the cartridge.
    • Step 5

Remove the needle and place a piece of tape over the top of the hole. If you used an air vent, punch a small hole in the tape with a pin to let the air escape.
    • Step 6

Snap the cartridge back into place in the iP3500 printer. Run a cleaning cycle and then print out a few sample copies on the printer to make sure that the ink is flowing as it should.
    • Skill: Easy
    • Ingredients:
    • Empty Canon iP3500 cartridge
    • Ink refill kit
    • Drill and 3 mm bit (optional)
    • Newspaper
    • Tape
    • Pin
    • Old clothes and gloves
    • Tip: You may wish to periodically check the tape to make sure it stays in place.
    • Tip: Never switch needles between replacement ink bottles without wiping them clean first. If even a little ink gets into the wrong-colored cartridge inkwell, it will affect the quality of the copies you make.
    • Warning:
    • Take care not to stain your clothes when refilling the inkwells. If you can perform the function outside or wear old clothes, you should probably do so. If you're at the office, cover your business clothes with a smock or use paper towels over your shirt front.
