How to Refill a Dell 964 Ink Cartridge

By Launie Sorrels

  • Overview

With the cost of ink cartridges high, sometimes it is better to just fill them up yourself. Just remember that printer companies do not want you to do this, and they most likely will not aid you in this endeavor. Printers are much cheaper than they were several years ago, and part of the reason is because the printer companies can charge the consumer for ink cartridges.

  • Black Cartridge

  • Step 1

Place the ink cartridge on something that you don't mind getting ink on.
  • Step 2

Peel the label off the top.
  • Step 3

Fill your syringe with 15 ml. of ink.
  • Step 4

Inject ink into hole. This should be done very slowly; otherwise the ink will spill out the top of cartridge. The ink can be injected into any of the holes--they all go to the same place.

  • Step 5

    Reinstall the cartridge.
  • Step 6

Leave the cartridge alone for 8 hours. This gives the ink time to soak into the sponge.
  • Step 7

Perform a couple of cleaning cycles, and you are finished.
  • Colored Cartridge

    • Step 1

Follow Steps 1 and 2 from Section 1.
    • Step 2

Fill your syringe with 7 ml. of ink. Use a different syringe for each color of ink.
    • Step 3

Inject ink into the hole. Magenta ink is injected in the hole on the top left, yellow ink in the left hole, and cyan in the hole to the right. This should be done very slowly; otherwise the ink will spill out the top of cartridge. In case of spillage, it is a good idea to cover the two holes that you are not injecting ink into. A small piece of tape will work perfect for this.
