How to Refill an HP 22 Color Ink Cartridge

By Catherine Johnson

  • Overview

Frequently replacing your HP printer's color ink cartridge can end up costing more than the price of the printer itself. An affordable option is to simply purchase bulk printer ink and conveniently refill the ink in your cartridge on demand. Not only does refilling your cartridge save time and money, but reusing your plastic printer cartridge also helps to reduce environmental waste.
Easily refill your HP 22 color cartridge
    • Step 1

Make sure the printer is turned on. Lift up the printer cover and lower the inner paper tray. The cartridge holders should be in the center. Pull and snap out the HP 22 color ink cartridge and remove it from the printer. Place the cartridge on the paper towels.
    • Step 2

Gently remove the sticker label on the top of the cartridge. Five refill holes are located underneath.

    • Step 3

Insert the unbent paper clip into each of the holes to determine which ink color belongs in each chamber.
    • Step 4

Fill the syringe with 6 ml of ink (see Resources below). Insert the syringe needle completely into the hole that matches the ink color. The tip of the needle should touch the bottom of the cartridge.
    • Step 5

Inject the ink slowly into the chamber until the inner sponge is soaked and filled.
    • Step 6

Repeat the filling process with the other inks, using a new syringe with each ink color.
    • Step 7

Remove the syringe. Turn the cartridge right side up with the print head facing downwards. Set the cartridge above the paper towels and leave it out for at least an hour. The cartridge print head and the paper towels should not touch each other.
    • Step 8

Insert the bottom of the refilled HP 22 cartridge into its holder inside of the printer. Snap the top of the cartridge into place and close the printer cover.
