How to Refill an HP 98 Black Ink Cartridge

    Replacing your HP black ink cartridges is an expensive and inconvenient maintenance task. Buying new cartridges every time you run out of ink can end up costing far more than the price of the printer. Refilling your HP cartridge with bulk printer ink not only saves you money, but also helps the environment and provides the convenience of refilling on demand.
    Easily refill your HP 98 black ink cartridge

    • Step 1

      Turn your printer on and lift up the cover. Remove the HP 98 cartridge by pulling the cartridge top forward and snapping it out of its holder. Place the cartridge on several pages of old newspapers.

    • Step 2

      Using the tip of the sharp knife, gently peel away the top part of the HP sticker label. There is a small refill hole underneath the label.

    • Step 3

      Fill the syringe with 15 cc of black refill ink (see Resources below). Insert the needle deep into the refill hole so that the needle is actually inside of the cartridge sponge.

    • Step 4

      Slowly inject the ink into the sponge until it is completely soaked.

    • Step 5

      Remove the syringe and firmly reseal the hole with the sticker label. Use additional tape to make sure the label is securely applied.

    • Step 6

      Gently wipe around the print head on the bottom of the cartridge with toilet paper. Remove clogs or any excess ink that may have dripped out.

    • Step 7

      Insert the cartridge bottom back into your printer's holder. Push the cartridge top back until the cartridge snaps into place, and close the printer cover.

    • Bulk black refill ink
    • Syringe
    • Tape
    • Toilet paper
    • Tip: Work in an area where you wouldn't mind any ink spillage. Quickly clean any messes with warm water and lots of soap. Wear disposable latex or rubber gloves to protect your hands while you work.
    • Tip: Make sure the area around the print head is wiped completely clean before reinserting the cartridge into the printer. Any clogs can cause the print nozzle to become blocked.
