How to Refill HP Officejet V40 Ink Cartridge

By Chris Moore

  • Overview

The ink cartridges used in a Hewlett Packard OfficeJet printer are of the thin, rectangular style. They are among the most common types of cartridges HP uses, and are among the easiest to refill when they run out of ink. How you refill a black ink cartridge is different from refilling a color ink cartridge, however.
  • Black and White Cartridges

  • Step 1

Set aside a flat surface for filling the cartridge. Clear away anything you don't want ink getting on. Cover the area with kitchen paper, old rags or paper towels to protect from ink spills or overflow.
  • Step 2

Hold the cartridge upside down. Use a pen knife to remove the small black circular seal on the cartridge bottom This will reveal the filling hole, which is plugged with a small ball bearing. Poke the ball into the cartridge with the knife tip or a ballpoint pen, making sure you don't damage any other part of the hole.
  • Step 3

Fill a clean plastic syringe or syringe-like bottle with replacement ink. One should be included with any ink refill kit you acquire. If it is brand new, you may have to pierce an opening into the tip of the syringe needle. Ten milliliters of ink should be enough.
  • Step 4

Place the needle inside the cartridge hole (the cartridge should still be sitting upside down) and inject the ink slowly into the cartridge.

  • Step 5

Reseal the fill hole after the cartridge is filled. The kit may come with small plugs to take care of this. Black electrical tape can be used to replace the seal.
  • Step 6

Turn the cartridge right side up and gently squeeze the sides. This will force unnecessary air out of the cartridge and the ink down to the bottom. Blot the print head with a paper towel, not your hands.
  • Step 7

Replace the cartridge in the OfficeJet printer and test it.
  • Color Cartridges

    • Step 1

Hold the cartridge so the large tab is in front and the printer head is in back (this is how the cartridge is placed in the printer). This cartridge has three chambers which each contains one color. In this position, the left side holds yellow ink, the middle holds magenta, and the right holds cyan. Each chamber has its own sealed fill hole.
    • Step 2

Drill open each of the fill holes. The refill kit should include a drill made for this very task.
    • Step 3

Fill the syringe bottle with one color ink. Insert the needle completely into the correct color chamber and slowly inject the ink inside. There is a hard sponge inside the chamber, so getting the needle in may take some effort.
    • Step 4

Blot the print head gently with a paper towel to remove excess ink. Don't touch the print head with your fingers, as your natural oils can damage it.
    • Step 5

Wash out the syringe with warm water and dry it out before inserting another color to refill the next chamber. Clean it once more after all three chambers have been refilled so it can be used in the future.
    • Step 6

Place the cartridge back in the printer once excess ink stops dripping. Test it by running a print. Don't reseal the fill holes, as it will create an air tight package that makes it hard for the ink to come out.
