Refill Instructions for HP Ink Cartridges

By Jason Gordon

  • Overview

Hewlett-Packard and other printer manufacturers make very little money from selling printers. They make most of their money from selling ink. That is why every printer manufacturer has its own ink formula and delivery mechanism (cartridge). Most inkjet owners blame the printer manufacturers for the high cost of ink and attempt to save money by refilling the ink cartridge themselves.

    • Step 1

Buy HP compatible ink. Buying the wrong ink can damage the print head and make the cartridge unusable.
    • Step 2

Remove the empty HP cartridge from the printer. Work over an area that can tolerate a spill.

    • Step 3

Peel back the label to reveal the filling holes. A black cartridge will have one hole while a color cartridge will have three holes for yellow, red and blue.
    • Step 4

Fill the syringe with the desired ink up to 5 ml for black cartridges and 2 to 3 ml for each of the colors. Insert the needle into the hole until you feel slight resistance and then slowly release the ink.
    • Step 5

Replace the ink cartridge label and put it back in the printer. Run a cleaning cycle one to three times to clean the print head. Print a test page to check. If nothing comes out, try waiting 24 hours for the ink to fully saturate the sponge.
