Step 1
Locate the filler hole on the cartridge. A standard black cartridge has the hole behind the tab on top of the lid, which you must widen with an eyelet screw. You must remove the lid with a flat knife to reach the holes in a color cartridge, which are on the plastic cover over the chambers. The filler hole is the printer access hole in a Mylar bag cartridge.

Fill your plastic syringe bottle with the matching shade of ink. A standard color cartridge won't hold more than 8 milliliters of each shade, so you won't need any more. A standard black cartridge holds up to 20 milliliters and a Mylar cartridge holds 25 of one shade, so one syringe full may not be enough for them.

Step 3
Insert the needle into the filler hole to inject the ink into it. For standard cartridges, insert the needle all the way in the chamber, penetrating the sponge within. On Mylar bag cartridges, never insert the needle more than half an inch to avoid possibly tearing the bag within.

Inject the ink slowly and observe the cartridge carefully to see when it is full. Look to see if the ink starts coming out of the filler hole on a standard black cartridge. Stop filling a color cartridge chamber when the ink starts appearing on the top of the sponge around the needle. Look for ink seeping out of the waste ink port near the access hole to tell when a Mylar bag cartridge is full.

Step 5
Remove air from the Mylar bag once this type of cartridge is full. Stand the cartridge up so the access port points upward, reinsert the needle in the access hole with the plunger down, and draw back the plunger to draw air into it.

Step 6
Wash the syringe thoroughly once you are done filling one shade. Dry it completely if you are moving on to another refill.
