How to Refill a Lexmark X2580 Ink Cartridge

By Nathaniel Miller

  • Overview

The Lexmark X2580 multi function printer is an office manager's dream come true. With the ability to copy, fax, scan, and print color and black/white documents all from the same location, the Lexmark X2580 is extremely useful in an office setting. It is also at home in the personal office setting as it can print photos, emails, or text documents easily. The Lexmark X2580 is a color printer and has two ink cartridges, one color and one black. These cartridges come in as one of the least expensive cartridges on the market today at around $18 per cartridge, yet depending on your print settings you may be looking at new cartridges every other ream of paper. This expense can add up, however there lies an alternative in refilling these ink cartridges. Refilling ink cartridges can offset the expense of ink by a considerable amount and is easy to do.

    • Step 1

Begin by removing the cartridges from the printer. Lift the top tray of the printer up about four inches until a small lever flips up and holds the top in place. The two ink cartridges will now be visible, with the black cartridge having a black cartridge cover and the color cartridge having a purple cartridge cover. Remove the appropriate cartridge by unsnapping the cartridge cover and pulling the cartridge toward you.
    • Step 2

Examine the bottom of the cartridge to see if the ink jets are clogged with dried ink. Use the alcohol wipes to gently scrub any ink out of the jets and then flip the cartridge over and use the drill supplied in the refill kit to make a hole in the top of the cartridge.

    • Step 3

Fill the syringe with the amount of ink recommended by the chart provided in the refill kit and insert the needle into the hole you made in the top of the cartridge. Depress the plunger slowly to push the ink into the reservoir. When no more ink will fit in the reservoir, pull the needle out and flush the syringe with water. Allow it to air dry.
    • Step 4

Reinstall the ink cartridge back in the printer by snapping the cartridge into the cartridge cradle, closing the cartridge cover, and shutting the printer top. The printer will equilibrate and recognize the newly filled cartridge.
    • Step 5

Allow the cartridge to sit in the printer for a few hours to saturate the reservoir fibers with ink, then run "clean and align" under print properties.
    • Skill: Easy
    • Ingredients:
    • Ink cartridge refill kit
    • Alcohol wipes
    • Tip: Refill the ink cartridges when they are 3/4 empty to ensure that the ink jets do not get clogged with dried ink.
    • Warning:
    • Do not force ink into the reservoir too quickly as this could cause frothing and introduce air into the ink chamber.
