How to Refill Printer Ink Cartridge on a Lexmark X3430

By Ryan Bauer

  • Overview

You can save a lot of money by recycling your Lexmark X3430 cartridges instead of throwing them out and replacing them with new ones. The only thing required to do so is a refill kit, which you can buy at most electronics retailers in the ink cartridge section. They normally cost less than $10, and will refill several cartridges before they need replaced. There are color kits and black ink kits, so make sure you buy the right one for your application.

    • Step 1

Flip open your printer to access the ink cartridges. This is done by pivoting the entire top section backwards. The opening point is about halfway down the printer. It flips open just like the scanner bed does, rotating backwards about 45 degrees to expose the printer's internal components. The cartridges will automatically bring themselves to the center for removal.
    • Step 2

Lift the locking handle next to the cartridge you wish to remove by pulling the handle straight up. The cartridge is now free to be removed and set on your work surface. You will see that the case is made from solid plastic and offers no existing way to fill it, so a hole will need to be drilled. Remove the hand-operated cartridge drill from the refill kit, and place the tip of it directly in the center of the top part of the cartridge. Turn it to the right until a hole has been bored all the way through the case.
    • Step 3

Fill the cartridge if it is a black cartridge, since the entire inside of the cartridge is one compartment. For a color cartridge, you will need to drill two more holes for the other colors. Place each hole on the top of the cartridge, 1/4 inch from the slimmest edge, so that the holes run lengthwise. This will provide you with access to each compartment. To identify which compartment holds which color, insert an unfolded paper clip and examine what color remains on the tip of it.
    • Step 4

Remove the ink from the refill kit, and begin to fill the cartridge. Allow the ink level to rise until it is around 1/4 inch from the top. If you're refilling a color cartridge, repeat this step with each color, making sure you put the correct color in each compartment. When you are done filling, place one of the included stickers over each hole you drilled. This will help keep the ink from evaporating or sloshing out.
    • Step 5

Put the cartridge back into the printer the same way it came out. Close the lever to lock it into place, then lower the lid. The printer will automatically recognize the new cartridge and calibrate itself to it.
    • Skill: Moderately Easy
    • Ingredients:
    • Black or color inkjet refill kit
    • Paper towels
    • Tip: Check the functionality of the cartridge by printing something. It is normal for the first few lines to contain smudges, blotches or blank spots. This is due to the ink still making its way to the nozzle.
