Symbols are often used during Hope Cramer's Reiki therapy sessions. She is a certified Usui Reiki Master-Teacher and has been using this form of holistic healing for years. Dr. Usui developed this type of natural healing centuries ago, and it has been passed from Master-Teachers to their students for ages. The symbols used in Reiki are Japanese symbols called Kanji. The word "kanji" means "Japanese lettering."

Cramer informs us that she "uses the Reiki symbols and intention to bring in the energies through the crown chakra that is right above the head in the middle, and it goes through their hands and to the client or to the recipient."

Reiki symbols are Sanskrit-derived Japanese symbols that are said to be passed down from the spirit world. Reiki practitioners begin using them by meditating on them, because they are said to have their own consciousness. Practitioners use the symbols as a gateway to the healing energies.

The kanji symbols commonly used are the "Cho Ku Rei," "Sei He Ki," "Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen," and the "Dai Ko Myo." Each has their own consciousness and therefore, their own purpose in the healing process.

For example, the "Cho Ku Rei" symbol is the power symbol. This symbol, when used, will increase the energy flow for healing the physical body. It is used primarily at the beginning of a Reiki session, but may be used at any time during a treatment.

The "Sei He Ki" symbol is the symbol that is most commonly used for emotional healing and balancing. Reiki practitioners believe that the cause of disease is hidden in the subconscious mind or the emotions and or the conscious mind or the mental processes. This symbol is used to treat the cause of disease within the emotional and mental bodies. After the symbol identifies where the energy needs to be sent, it purifies that area and then rebalances it. This symbol is said to be helpful in healing relationship problems, memory lapse problems, depression, anger issues, phobias, emotional releases during treatments, clearing the room of negative energy or even to purify water or food.

The "Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen" symbol is used to send energy across time and space. This is the symbol used for distance healings. You can use it to send energy across a room or across the world. You can send Reiki energies into the future using this symbol. You can send energies into the past as well to treat issues that have affected you poorly.

The fourth symbol, the "Dai Ko Myo" symbol is used by Masters and is used to Light of the Awakened Heart and signifies wisdom and clairvoyance. When this symbol is meditated on, it can heal the soul on a different level than that of the physical body. It sends out the thoughts that the spiritual soul is the template or basic form for the physical body; the physical derives from the spiritual. The meaning of "dai ko myo" literally transfers to "Great Being of the Universe, shine on me." It can also mean "great shining light."

Using these symbols in Reiki merely concentrates the energy to one specific part of the body or soul. They are used to intensify the healing energies and to increase the effects on ailing parts of the psyche or physical body.
