"Reiki is wonderful for stress," claims Reiki expert Hope Cramer. She practices holistic medicine including Reiki for treating physical and emotional illnesses. She explains that oftentimes people will seek Reiki treatment for relaxation purposes. It makes patients feel nurtured.

"Reiki is unconditional love." It is a universal energy that flows from the practitioner to the patient, "and if you allow this energy to come through you, you can feel nothing but love for the person."

Because the universal energies works on all levels, it can even reach the emotional levels including stress. A lot of patients will feel warmth or tingling during their Reiki treatments. This can have a relaxing effect on the patient.

"When you have a Reiki treatment, you will feel sleepy and relaxed," says Cramer. Occasionally people will even feel a level of excitement or a "little giddy" after their Reiki session.

Performing a meditation before the Reiki session is a great way to clear the room of any negative energy. Meditating also lets the positive energy flood the room. This has an effect of aligning the patient with the practitioner. Cramer wants "them to feel that they are aligned with" her when she is treating them. After the client and practitioner are aligned, they can begin the flow of universal energy that defines Reiki treatments.

Sometimes combining meditations with Reiki will allow a deeper level of healing.

"One technique I have used that I was never taught is using breaths together with thoughts to move the energy through the person's body," says Cramer.

Reiki Master-Teachers often feel the energies of their "guides" to treat individual clients in different ways. For example, Cramer will "meditate and blow the energies through the top of the head (of her client) through their crown chakra and imagine it going through the entire body and back up."

There are seven different major chakras used during Reiki treatments, but the treatments are not limited to those seven.

The heart chakra is one of the most important chakras. Having this open makes healing much more affective and easier. To attune to this chakra, Cramer (and many other Reiki Master-Teachers) clears "the area with Reiki, with intention, aromatherapy and a healing crystal ball that is tuned to the F note which goes straight to the heart chakra."

With stress relief, often emotions are released as part of the healing process. Cramer claims that sometimes she has to stop a Reiki session and hug the grieving patient because they are crying from the release of emotions.

"It is so wonderful, because that is part of the healing process," says Cramer.

Crystals are not the only things that are associated with the seven chakras; colors are also related to the chakras of the body. Cramer sometimes starts off "using the colors that relate to the chakras," and then she uses her intuition as a practitioner and if that doesn't feel right, she changes to the crystals or aromatherapy.

Using intuition is a big part of Reiki therapy, because if the practitioner ignores their guides, "it's not in the client's best interest," says Cramer. Making sure that the Reiki practitioner is certified and attuned is very important.
