How to Replace Ink on a Brother Printer

By Heidi Braley

  • Overview

Printing documents and photos at home on your own Brother Printer is convenient, time-saving and economical. After you buy your printer, you should have a few weeks of perfect printing. However, the time will come when a little error message will pop up stating that an ink cartridge is empty. You will need to know how to replace it before you can continue printing. It is not difficult, and the Brother printers are very user-friendly.

    • Step 1

Look at the front of your printer. On the LCD screen, you will see the error message. To the far right and on the lower side, you will see a tab where you can open a cartridge door. Open the flap and you will see four sets of cartridges: black, yellow, blue and red (although the names might be different).
    • Step 2

Pull the top flap that is hanging over the top of the appropriate color cartridge. It will pull down, revealing a little square cartridge. Hold it on either side and pull it straight out.

    • Step 3

Place the new full cartridge of ink in the printer, the same way you took out the old. Make sure you have pulled off the protective plastic tape first. Push the ink in all the way, until there is a slight snap. The top flap will partially come up. Close it by pushing it back into place, also with a snap.
    • Step 4

Close the front cartridge compartment door and look at the front LCD screen. You will see a message asking what color cartridge you just replaced. Follow the instructions and allow the Brother printer to run through its cleaning procedure. When the screen returns to its normal mode, you can continue printing.
