How to Replace an Ink Printer Cartridge

By Greg Johnson

  • Overview

Replacing ink cartridges is a normal part of owning and using a personal printer. Most printer manufacturers design a similar ink-changing process for personal models, allowing you to replace ink without extra help. To ensure compatibility, read your printer's user documentation to determine the exact type and model of ink cartridge to purchase.
    • Step 1

Turn your printer on by pressing the power button. If your printer does not power on, make sure it is plugged in.
    • Step 2

Open the printer case to access the inkjets. Most printers are opened by lifting a hinged section of the case. Some may require you to undo a latch or panel. Look for a diagram on the underside of the panel or case section that demonstrates changing an ink cartridge. The diagram will help you insert the cartridges correctly.

    • Step 3

Press the ink replacement button on your printer if you do not have access to the inkjets. This should cause them to scroll into view.
    • Step 4

Look for black and color ink descriptions on the inkjets, and determine which cartridge you will replace. Open that cartridge slot by pressing down on the latch, then lift the latch up. You should see the old ink cartridge now.
    • Step 5

Remove the old ink cartridge and dispose of it. Remove the film or tape covering the head of your new cartridge.
    • Step 6

Slide the new cartridge into the slot so it faces the same direction as the one you removed. Check your printer's diagram or user manual if the cartridge does not fit, or if it is unclear how to insert the new cartridge.
    • Step 7

Close the cartridge slot latch by pressing down until you hear a click, and replace the panel or case section. Press the ink refill button again if you do not hear your printer respond.
    • Skill: Easy
    • Ingredients:

    • Tip: Your printer's diagram or user manual will be helpful in detailing cartridge replacement for your particular model. Many printers are simple to access following these instructions, but some may be constructed differently.
