If you are planning on traveling with your pet, you may find some resistance from hotels and other housing locations. Our traveling expert, Will Mello, owner of Online Vacations, where homeowners advertise their vacation properties since 1993, says

traveling with your pets can pose some problems.

"Traveling with pets appears to be becoming more and more difficult. There is a website online now that advertises only pet-friendly rentals: www.Sunbeaches.com. There have a lot of pet-friendly advertisements and we just recommend them when people call, because we don't allow pets at any of our properties," Mello says.

Mello says you can encounter problems with vacation homes as well.

"There are very few homeowners that will allow pets in their homes and one of the main reasons is that the homeowner's associations are starting to create rules about pets in the building and on the grounds. So, a lot of times the homeowner doesn't even have the choice to allow pets in the building. And the homeowners that own individual homes don't necessarily want pets in the units. A lot of people are calling and stating in their e-mail that they are allergic to pets. So if we rent to one person with pets and the next person coming in is allergic, we are going to have an issue," Mello says.

Here's some good advice that Mello gives: When you are traveling with your pet, the last thing you want is to arrive at your hotel and learn that your furry companion is not welcome. Use a little advance planning to ensure that you and your pet will both have a comfortable night's stay.

Most major hotels have websites. If you have a preference for a particular hotel chain (perhaps you are enrolled in a reward program with it), you can generally find out if the hotel allows pets on their website. If that information is not readily available, email the corporate office or the individual hotel itself to clarify whether your pet will be welcome. The pet policy may vary between different properties within the same chain, so even if you have stayed at a particular chain with your pet before, it is a good idea to confirm that your pet is welcome at the specific property. Some hotels require that you notify them ahead of time that you will be bringing your pet, so always check the hotel's policy when you make your reservation.

But what if you want to stay somewhere with a little more character? How can you find a romantic Bed and Breakfast that you and your spouse can enjoy with that furry kid whom you love best? Mello says there are several websites that can help you to find something out of the ordinary. Many contain helpful general information about traveling with pets as well.
