The Benbow Inn Restaurant and also Avelon here in Eureka are Wine Spectator Award of Excellence winners. Dining is taken very seriously up here. The restaurants tend to specialize in fresh, local ingredients particularly seafood. Humboldt Bay grows 70% of the oysters that are produced in California. So oysters are quite prolific and local chefs have a lot of fun playing with different ways of preparing them. We are also famous for salmon of course and rockfish.
I was in San Francisco just earlier this week and I am stunned by the thousands of restaurants - every other place is a restaurant. We don't have that selection here, but size we have what I consider to be a nice selection with some outstanding establishments. Seafood is of great interest because being that we are a fishing town and we have fishing boats coming with the fresh catch constantly. In the Old Town area we have the (1719) Sea Grill and Hurricane Gates, which is a fusion type restaurant - a really fun and hip kind of place. Avelon, which I mentioned before, is known for great wine and fantastic food and we have some really good Italian restaurants like Roy's Club Café.
We have five microbreweries here in Humboldt County. Last Coast Brewery here in Eureka has a lovely little grill and a lot of tourists go there to eat. There are also breweries in Fortuna and Arcadia.
Three of the casinos in the area also have restaurants, which is a great place to go for a good meal at a low coat.
