Resumes Sample For Internships

Tips and tricks for writing a resume and cover letter for an internship.

All the basic rules for resumes and cover letters are just as true for internships as they are for real jobs - these documents are how you get in the door, how you entice the person in charge of hiring decisions to give you a call and set up an interview. They are not a place for you to list every detail of every position you've ever held - no matter how long or short your work history and/or educational background may be.

To start off, all resumes should have the following information:

1) Name, address and phone number. (An e-mail address is a plus, but it shouldn't replace any of the other information)

2) An Objective Statement. (Battles can be won or lost with this sentence. It should be concise and relate specifically to the position and/or company you are applying to - one blanket statement for every possible place you might be applying to is going to be too general to catch someone's attention as they're leafing through materials from applicants.)

3) Summary of Qualifications. (The theory is that, if you're applying for an internship, you probably don't have much experience in the field, but you could have skills that can be easily translated into the field - this is where you highlight them.)

4) Education. (Unless you were involved in some related clubs or activities when you were in high school, there's really no need to list it, at all. You want to focus on your education now - your courses relevant to the field, clubs and activities that you're involved in that show you're a strong candidate for the position).

5) Related Professional Experience / Work History. (Unless you're applying for an internship that is closely related to your current or previous employment, leave behind the details of what you did/do at your job. Instead, focus on things that will show you to be reliable, hardworking and honest.)

Now that you've got some of the basics of your resume done, let's go back to your cover letter:

1) Always remember that your cover letter and resume should compliment each other, not depend on each other. A person reading either should get the same impression of who you are and what you can offer to the company.

2) As with the objective on your resume, be concise and highlight your desire to work with a specific company with a specific internship opportunity, instead of just a form letter - everyone hates receiving these (from politicians, editors, schools, etc), why would you try to sell yourself with one?

3) Research. Research. Research. Find out who, specifically, in the company would be in charge of processing internship requests. If you can't find a name, address everything to an Internship Coordinator or to Human Resources.

4) Be specific, make your letter memorable. Use your research to spark an example from your past or present that shows why this internship can be as rewarding for the company as it will be for you.

5) Above all else, write everything yourself. Plagiarizing other resumes and cover letters is just going to make you sound uninspired and dull (far too many people copy examples out of books or off the internet to make anything they find sound original or compelling). Getting someone else to write for you can lead to complications, as well. Your goal is to inspire the company to want to interview you, not some version of you that someone else recorded on paper.
