Sand Art Craft

This sand art project is an easy craft for children. They will have hours of fun decorating their favorite pictures or creating designs in a jar.

Items Needed:

Sand

Paper cups or bowls

Food color

Construction paper

Elmers glue

Coloring book

Directions:

Divide sand equally into several parts and place in cups or bowls.

Mix a few drops of food color with each cup of sand, mixing the sand around thoroughly until all sand has been colored.

(NOTE: you might want to color sand before hand and let it dry for one day before starting project)

Have child draw a picture onto the construction paper.

(NOTE: If child is to young to draw or just does not want to draw a picture, tear one out of a coloring book.)

Have child trace drawn picture, or picture from coloring book, with white Elmers glue.

After tracing picture with glue, have them sprinkle sand onto paper. Sand will stick to glue. Have your child experiment using several different colors of sand in different place on the picture.

Once completed, let dry overnight before hanging.

Glass Sand Art

Items Needed:

Clear glass jar or other clear container (with lid)

Sand

Food color

Paper cups or bowls

Directions:

Add drops of food color to each container holding sand. Mix together well so that sand is completely colored.

Let sand dry for one day.

Once sand is dry, take clear container and pour enough colored sand in to cover the bottom and be visible on the sides.

Then take another color and pour on top of the first one, reserving some of it also.

Repeat above procedures until the jar is filled. The jar will need to be filled to the top, to keep the sand from being shook around and mixing all of the colors together.

If you are using clear mason jars, you can attach a pretty piece of fabric to the seal of the jar, and screw the lid on top of it, making a decorative gift for either family or friends.
