Selecting And Installing A Bicycle Wall Rack

Need more storage space in your garage? Maybe a bicycle rack can help to get you organized. Find out how to select and easily install one with these tips and instructions.

If you're an avid bicycle rider, then you undoubtedly have at least one bike stored in your garage. And, if you're garage is filled up with other stuff, your bicycle might be difficult to locate at times. An easy solution for this problem can be to move your bicycle up off of the floor. To accomplish this, all you have to do is to select and purchase, then install a bicycle wall rack in your garage. Bicycle wall racks come in assorted sizes, depending on the number of bicycles you have to store. They are readily available at your local bicycle shop, and, at some home supply centers.

When you're selecting a suitable wall rack, look for one that will easily store your bicycle, yet take up the least amount of space in your garage. Some types of racks fold up almost flush to the wall when they are not in use. And, if you have accessories- such as a helmet, riding pads, et cetera- to store as well, you should select a bicycle wall rack that has a shelf for storing those items as well.

The basic models of wall racks store one bicycle at a time. They're usually made of heavy-duty stainless steel or painted metal tubing. They have arm hooks that hold your bicycle up and out of the way, saving you valuable floor space.

A second type of bicycle wall rack you can purchase stores two bicycles at a time flat against a wall. It folds down when it is not in use, and it is available with a shelf for storing your bicycle accessories too. This dual rack is made of heavy-duty tubing, and its holders are padded in order to protect your bicycles from scratches and damage. Just like the more basic models, installation is easy as it comes with screws that secure the rack to the wall. Read and follow the manufacturer's instructions in order to achieve the best results.

If you don't want to actually install a wall rack for your bicycles, because you live in a rented apartment, or in other housing where putting screws into a wall is not an option, then a "gravity stand" could be the right choice for you. There is no installation involved with this type of stand, all you have to do is assemble and use it. It sits on the floor, and it stores up to two bicycles- one above the other- on its adjustable holders. Another nice feature about this type of bicycle stand is that it can be easily moved if you change addresses. And, if you decide that you want to permanently install it, you have that option too. Bicycle stands can be found at your local bicycle store, or, by doing a search on the Internet.

And, if you have more than two bicycles to store, you'll need to buy at least two bicycle wall racks. Or, you can select and purchase a four or six bicycle stand. There are also larger stands that can accommodate a larger number of bikes too. These stands resemble the ones that can be seen at schools or at play grounds. Stands don't need any type of installation. Instead, they are made with leveling feet that hold them securely upright.

Finally, if you don't have the available wall space, you can also select and purchase a ceiling-style bicycle lift. They're made of heavy-duty steel and a rope mechanism that can store your bike from the ceiling. Installing it is easy, if you read and follow the manufacturer's instructions, and use the hardware that comes with it. These models can securely hold a bicycle that weighs up to approximately fifty pounds.
