Step 1
Contact your state insurance department for pre-licensing requirements. Some states require completion of a pre-licencing course before taking the state exam. These programs can cost $300 to $1,000 so ask your state for an approved list of programs to compare costs.
-
Step 2
If your state doesn't require a pre-licensing course, request a study guide from your state insurance department. This will focus your studying to the areas that will be on the exam.
-
Step 3
Even if you are not ready to take the state exam yet, contact the insurance department to schedule a testing date and time. Some states only offer testing dates several times a year, so it is important to get something scheduled so you don't delay the process.

Step 4
Once you receive your license to sell auto insurance, decide where you would like to work. If you haven't worked in the auto insurance industry before, consider working for another agent for a few years. After you get some experience, you can open your own agency and have more earning potential.

Step 5
Understand that most states require that auto insurance agents complete continuing education each year to keep their license current. Taking these courses will also keep you current on changes in the industry. If you took a pre-licensing course, the school probably offers these courses.
