How to Sell Auto Insurance?

By Contributing Writer

  • Overview

Drivers are always on the look out for less expensive car insurance rates and new drivers are generally required by law to purchase some sort of coverage. This creates a potentially lucrative opportunity selling auto insurance. In order to become successful, there are a few things you should consider before you begin your career.
    • Step 1

Become licensed in the states(s) in which you will be doing business. This may require testing, fees, or both depending on your state (see Resources below). You can visit your state's licensing agency for information or you can contact an established agency like State Farm, which offers resources for licensing to potential employees.
    • Step 2

Market your services using direct mail campaigns, billboard advertising, cold calls, and a website. You will also need business cards and professional letterhead. It may be a good idea to begin your career working with a well known insurance provider like State Farm, Allstate, or AIG. In addition to training and marketing materials, you will get name recognition by dealing with a company that already has a name in the industry.

    • Step 3

Strive for excellent customer service. Respond to questions promptly and make sure all your clients fully understand their policy. This includes prices, coverage options, and names of those protected under the policy.
    • Step 4

Stay informed on all aspects of the industry. Insurance sales is very competitive and to remain profitable, you will want to be informed. Subscribe to trade magazines, take sales classes to improve your technique and customer relations, and attend industry meetings and seminars.
