How to Sell a Car for Scrap Metal

By Pauline Gill

  • Overview

Abandoned cars are unappealing and unsafe, especially if children are present. Some towns and cities have ordinances regarding them, so you must remove your inoperable car. There are a number of options to get rid of old cars. If the car has little value, selling it for scrap metal is a good choice. There are some preparations before the salvage company arrives.

    • Step 1

Assess the value of the car and ensure it is inoperable. If the car is operable, consider donating it to charity. Goodwill takes cars that run. If the car is less than 10 or 15 years old, a junk yard may want to buy the car for parts.

    • Step 2

Find a salvage yard. Check the yellow pages or go online to superpages.com. Enter your zip code or city and state for a list of salvage companies near you. Check out familycarbuyers.com. It buys cars in all conditions. Contact the salvage company, find out what you need to remove and find out what it pays. The usual amount is $50 to $100.
    • Step 3

Drain all fluids, including oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, windshield washer and the radiator. Remove the radiator, battery, carburetor, air filter, distributor cap, spark plugs, wires, engine, transmission, exhaust, dashboard, seats, carpeting, headlights and tires.
    • Step 4

Sell any car parts that are salvageable. Tires, radiators, batteries, transmissions and even dashboards might have some value. Consider eBay or the local newspaper. This is a chance to make some extra money. To add value to your scrap car, fill it with any other scrap metal that you have around such as cans, aluminum and iron.
