How to Send Flowers Internationally

By Garnet Greene

  • Overview

Flowers are the perfect gift to send internationally. They require no translation. Beginning shortly after the invention of the telegraph, it's been possible to send flowers remotely. Now the Internet makes it easier than ever. Large global networks of florists are available to send flowers to many locations--some with same day service. A few areas of the world remain outside the service area of the floral networks. You'll have to get creative to send flowers to these areas.
    • Step 1

Order your arrangements early. If you plan to send flowers overseas it's critical, whenever possible, to order them a week prior to the delivery date. Although many services promise quick delivery, it's best to allow for complications, communication problems, difficulty with credit cards and local holidays.
    • Step 2

Order through a major service provider with a large network to reach the widest variety of locations. Established reliable companies like FTD or 1-800-Flowers can deliver to most of the world's major cities. FTD appears to have the largest network of overseas delivery locations. Many florists use FTD's network to ship their flowers.

    • Step 3

Find a provider locally if the larger companies do not service the desired area. If you speak the language of the country you want to send flowers to, you may be able to call a local florist and have them deliver flowers. Try researching a local florist online or if that is not successful, call a major hotel in the area and ask to speak to a concierge. If there is a local florist, a concierge will know where to find it.
    • Step 4

Send other types of gifts to soldiers. Flowers often cannot be sent to soldiers, especially to those involved in a military action. However, soldiers greatly appreciate other types of gifts. One company that will help you send gifts to troops is Treats for Troops. Treats for Troops sends gifts that have been designed to meet the restrictions of the postal service and the military. To send a soldier you know a gift, you need to register him with Treats for Troops. Treats For Troops also provides an opportunity to "adopt" a soldier you don't know; many service people do not have families who can afford to send them overseas gifts.
    • Step 5

Prepare to pay more than you would domestically for flowers. Typically in the United States, you can find a basic bouquet or arrangement for $30 to $40. Flowers cost 30 to 60 percent more when shipped internationally.
    • Skill: Moderately Easy
    • Ingredients:
    • Credit or debit card
    • Tip: An arrangement of roses will outlast most other cut flowers.
    • Warning:
    • If you contact a foreign florist, arrange to pay without exposing any personal financial information.
