First you need to know how to navigate a computer and how to use the mouse and drop down menus, things like that, plus understanding how to connect to the Internet and what the Internet is, how information is passed around and, of course, what an e-mail is.

The best thing to do is go to yahoo.com or hotmail.com, which both offer free e-mail accounts. Just click on "new user" and follow the instructions for choosing an e-mail address and setting up a password. It's very simple. You can then test it by sending yourself and e-mail and after that the sky's the limit.

If you are new to the Internet you will find out that you are going to need a password every time you go somewhere, so some people think it's easier to use the same password for everything. A lot of people do use the same password, but it just depends on how worried you are about Internet security. Some people will change their passwords every so often. But I would say that starting out it's probably good to use a password you can easily remember.
