How to Setup a PayPal Account

By Amanda Kondolojy

  • Overview

PayPal is an electronic commerce service that allows you to maintain an online account where you can keep, send and receive money. Although most people prefer brick-and-mortar banks for everyday financial needs, having a PayPal account is essential if you like to shop online or use auction websites such as eBay.
How to Setup a PayPal Account
    • Step 1

Go to the PayPal official website (see Resources below) and locate the "Sign in" pane on the left. Click on the link that says "Sign up now."
    • Step 2

Select whether you need a personal or business/professional account. Personal accounts are fine for sending and receiving money, and are free, but if you own an e-business and want to use PayPal, there are some fees associated with large transactions or those that occur using different types of currency. Click on the "Learn more" link to find out which type of account you need, and then click "get started."

    • Step 3

Fill in all of your vital information, including name, address and email address. It is vital that all of this information be correct, as any incorrect information (especially regarding your email and physical address) may hinder future transactions and cause you to be locked out of your account. Once you have entered all of your information, click on the "Submit" button to create your account.
    • Step 4

Check your email. In order to use your PayPal account, you will have to verify your email address by clicking on a link sent to your inbox. If you do not receive it within 10 minutes of submitting your information, try checking your spam filter. If you still can't find it, log in to your account and click on the "help" link at the bottom of your account's main page.
    • Skill: Moderately Easy
    • Ingredients:
    • Bank account
    • Email address
    • Tip: If you do not feel safe clicking on links from your email (or if your mail client doesn't support it), you can verify your account by locating your verification number in the email and then copy and pasting it into the "verify email" tab on your account's main page.
    • Warning:
    • It is very important to closely monitor your PayPal account, and to report any suspicious activity immediately. To report a problem, go to the "Help" tab on your account overview.
