How to Shop for Quality Car Insurance

By James Bolger

  • Overview

People tend to put a lot more thought into buying a car than buying car insurance. Yet shopping for quality car insurance can have as much, or more, impact on your financial health. At the least, shop for quality car insurance that meets the minimum requirements for your state or local government, as well as any requirements for your car loan or rental agreement. Seek car insurance from a reliable provider, one willing to pay claims without making you jump through hoops. Finally, get enough coverage to protect your personal finances in the event of an accident.
Will your car insurance meet your needs?
    • Step 1

Check with the experts. When looking for a reliable car insurance provider, start by checking the experience other people have had. JD Powers and Associates runs an annual survey of auto insurance companies, tracking customer satisfaction with claims handling and customer service. In addition, many state insurance regulatory agencies maintain statewide databases of customer complaints with car insurance companies.
    • Step 2

Ask around. Friends, relatives, neighbors and co-workers can share their experiences with car insurance. Don't judge a company by one poor experience, but if several people express dissatisfaction with an insurer, consider it a warning sign.

    • Step 3

Get expert help. You might want to ask an independent insurance agent for help. While this may mean paying an extra fee, the independent agent will compare various insurance company offerings and help you select a policy that meets your needs. Best of all, retaining your business motivates the independent agent to find the coverage that best meets your needs.
    • Step 4

Read the policy carefully once you've selected a company. Avoid policies that require you to give up your rights to sue the company if not satisfied, or that require use of substandard after-market parts for repairs.
    • Step 5

Consider your driving habits when choosing how much to pay. A safe driver in a rural area might choose to pay lower premiums and accept a higher deductible. On the other hand, drivers in crowded city streets may feel that some damage is likely and accept the higher premiums in return for a lower deductible.
    • Skill: Moderately Easy
    • Tip: Professional associations and other groups sometimes offer their members discount car insurance. This can be a real bargain, but verify that the coverage meets the standards set out in this article.
