Step 1
Hang your blinds in the window and determine how many slats you will need to remove. You will probably want your blinds to just reach the window sill and will need to remove the extra blinds up to that point.
-
Step 2
Find the bottom rail. This rail is a solid plastic bar located at the bottom of the blinds. You will need to remove the round plugs you see at the bottom of the rail. If you have trouble popping off these plugs, a screwdriver may make the job easier.
-
Step 3
Pull out the lift cords from each of the holes covered by the round plugs. The cords will be wedged in the holes and you may need to remove them with the tip of your screwdriver or a pair of tweezers. Untie or cut off the knots at the end of the lift cords. Pull up on the lift cords until the blinds are loose enough that you can slide off the bottom rail. Once the bottom rail is removed, you can pull off the excess slats from the bottom.
-
Step 4
Replace the bottom rail when the blinds have been shortened to your specifications. You will need to thread the lift cords back through the corresponding holes in the rail.
-
Step 5
Rotate the blinds to the open position. Because you removed several slats, the lift cords will now be too long for the remaining slats. Cut off the excess amount of cord, leaving a few inches remaining. Thread the lift cords through the holes at the bottom of the rail and tie knots in them. Push any excess cord into the holes. Replace the plastic caps and begin using your shortened blinds.
