There are several reasons for buying a wireless doorbell system. Because they operate by transmitting a radio signal from the door to the receiver, installation is very simple. All you have to do is insert the batteries or plug the receiver unit in and attach the button device to the wall next to your door.
As doorbell expert John Hartman explains, "People sometimes find themselves re-modeling and they want to get rid of the old push button out front. They may not like the old style chime box hanging on the wall or they might feel uncomfortable messing with the electrical wiring, so they can replace the push button with a transmitter and they get a surface-mounted wireless battery operated door chime for the inside of the house. That's one reason to switch to a wireless doorbell system. Another reason is that sometimes transformers go bad or the mechanisms go bad in the old chime or the wire goes bad, so they have no choice but to replace them. The easiest way of doing this is to install a completely wireless system."
Wireless doorbell systems also solve the problem of missing visitors because you didn't hear the bell. With a wireless system the sound unit can be placed anywhere inside your home and you can even choose from systems with multiple devices to be placed throughout your home. This is particularly useful if you frequently work in your basement or garage, places you might not hear a conventional doorbell system.
Even without replacing your existing doorbell system you can add a wireless transmitter and receivers to the current system allowing you to hear the doorbell throughout your home and even outdoors.
As Hartman describes, "You just take a little module that wires into the existing chime and it transmits to the receiver that has the chime on it. So every time the door bell rings, it seeks out that receiver that is just plugged into a wall and it will transmit the ring to that module. You could put one upstairs, one in the basement, and one in the garage and it will transmit throughout the house when the front door bell rings. The range is about 70 to 75 feet outside of the house."
Lighted systems are also available that flash when someone is at the door, making the system useful for the hearing impaired. Wireless doorbell systems can also increase the security of your home. Some models include a sensor that alerts you to movement or sound outside the door. You can also choose from systems that offer voice intercom or video, allowing you to speak to or see the person behind the door before you open it.
As you can see there are a number of reasons why choosing a wireless doorbell system makes sense, and they are available in price ranges from $12 to $150. You can purchase the systems online or from most home improvement stores, and because they are so easy to install, you can easily do the job yourself.
