Should a diy fence be attempted by a homeowner? A fence can be done by a handy homeowner, but more often than not a professional will do a better job. If you have never built a fence before and you're wondering...
If you have never built a fence before and you're wondering whether you're up for the task, there's some important information you must know. Our fencing expert, Richard Novigrod, who has ten years experience, has his own opinions.
"I think if you're handy you can do it. But the main problem I see with people trying to do it themselves is that there are a few people that would try and then they realize that the ground is really hard. Probably, the hardest part is digging the holes and setting the posts. More often than not, there's a lot of limestone or rock in the ground, and it's hard to dig a hole. So, that's typically what a novice might run into. And at that point they say, "I'm not going to do it myself. I'm just going to call someone," Novigrod says.
However, many homeowners feel at ease about building fences. The website, Dannylipford.com, advises that as long as you follow the manufacturer's instructions, most fences can be installed in an average yard in three days. This is especially true if you get your neighbors to help you out. Make sure you plan and organize this project ahead of time.
If you're ready to start constructing your fence, make sure you check on the location of your property lines. Get all the permits you need in place and call your utility company so they can tell you where not to dig.
Here are some basic fence building instructions: determine the location of all posts, measure and mark the appropriate spots, dig holes for posts (the hole should be wider at the very bottom), mix and pour cement, secure posts in cement for 24 hours, attach fence panels to fence, and secure gate and final touches.
Tools differ depending on the type of fence you are building. However, there are a few you will always need. These tools include tape measure, level mason string, sledge hammer or mallet, a post hole digger (or rent a gas powered auger), wheelbarrow, shovel, and items like screwdrivers, pliers, and wrenches.
Novigrod says what it comes down to in the end is confidence. If you believe you can build your own fence, you can. However, you must make planning a top priority. You must research and talk to fence construction companies, as well. The professionals can give you tips and good advice.
Building a fence can be a rewarding experience because you will have the knowing pride that you put it together. You can also make it any way you want it - you're your own boss. If you feel up for the task and you are determined to build your own fence this year, just make sure you understand the entire process before you nod your head with a definitive yes.
