Decorating your home can be a very big job, especially if you try doing it on your own. If you feel that you could use some assistance, an interior decorator may be a good choice for you. If you have never hired an interior decorator before, you may not know what to look for or what to expect from a professional decorator.

Kathy Dodson, award-winning interior decorator and owner of Decorating Dens, says that the interior decorator is there primarily to work with you and to provide you with a useful service. "You should basically be able to tell them what you want. They will come in [to meet with] you and ask you what you want out of the space."

After you discuss your goals and desires with your home interior decorator, he or she will most likely ask how much and what type of use you want to get out of the room or area. Dodson says that the interior decorator will help you to figure out how you can achieve that goal. This can apply to one room or to an entire home.

Dodson says that designers and decorators have access to many more decorating resources than the general public. "They have inside tracks on how to find things. If you have an idea of what style you want, they can basically help you make that happen." Since interior decorators know the best places to purchase items for your home, they may even be able to save you some money in the long run. Also, if you have no idea where to purchase certain items, professional decorators will often have the answer.

Dodson says that these are some general qualities of interior decorators, but that all of them will do things very differently. She says it is important to talk to a few interior decorators before you choose one. "Interview them, and find out how they work. See what style you are most comfortable with."

During the interview process, Dodson says that you should also make sure that your personality is going to work with the interior decorator's personality. "Do you click together? You don't want to get half way through a project and just hate your designer."

You can hire an interior decorator for whatever project scope you may need. You may want to hire him or her for only a three-hour consultation to get some assistance in planning your project or to gain some insight on which direction or should take. On the other hand, you may hire an interior decorator to plan and implement the d├ęcor for your entire home. Your design needs and budget will help you determine these things.

Working with a home interior decorator can be a wonderful experience if you find a decorator you like and trust. Doing some research and planning ahead can help you to find the right one. Also, talking to people you know who have used interior decorators can help to point you in the right direction.
