When Should You Hire A Financial Planner?

There is a difference between, for example, professional investment management and professional investment or financial guidance. My belief, and our belief at Charles Schwab and in the financial planning industry, is that no matter your age, size of your portfolio, or experience, it never hurts to get sort of an overall financial or portfolio examination or check up completed by someone who is an objective financial professional. No matter your age, you get a health check up every year. Even someone who is just starting out in personal finance can do well to get good information before the first dollar goes into any investment. Financial guidance could accomplish debt management, investment, allocation plans, saving guidance and newer principles that can be applied regardless of your current situation. So, on that side, professional investment or financial guidance is one thing. Now professional money management could be beneficial for someone who has a portfolio that they can't manage due to a heavy work schedule and they just don't have the time or passion to manage their money on their own. In that case, they may want to hire somebody who is objective to make those decisions for them as their portfolio grows, and all they want to do is be that peak wage earner, to provide that money to the trusted advisor and meet with that advisor on a periodic basis.
