How Often Should a Person Test a Medical Alert System?

By Casey Holley

  • Overview

An elderly or disabled person who is worried that a fall or medical emergency may prevent him from getting medical attention, especially when a phone isn't within reach uses a medical alert system. A traditional medical alert system performs a weekly self-test to ensure the unit functions properly. However, testing the equipment manually is still recommended and encouraged.
  • Reasons

The most obvious reason to check the system on a regular basis it to ensure that it stays functional in case of an actual emergency. However, there are other reasons to do this. Many medical alert system companies offer a warranty on its products. In most cases, the warranty is conditional upon testing the unit monthly. Also, testing the unit is the only way to find out if the battery in the pendant must be replaced.
  • Regular Testing

When a medical alert system is used under regular working conditions, it must be tested at least once per month. It is a good idea to test it when you test the smoke detectors in your home. This monthly test is the only way to ensure that the equipment works like it should. Even when the system isn't being actively used, the batteries and other electronic components can wear down.

  • Dropping the Unit

You must test your medical alert system if you drop the personal pendant alarm, or if the base unit falls. Either of these scenarios can disconnect wires or damage other components of the system. In some cases, the internal components may be damaged even when there is no damage to external casing.
  • Power Outages

Testing a medical alert system after a power outage is necessary because power surges sometimes occur with power outages. These surges can short out crucial parts of the system equipment. Even if the medical alert system equipment is plugged into a surge protector, testing it after the power outage is still necessary.
  • Testing Instructions

A medical alert system should be tested by pressing the button on the pendant. Once you press the button, you should time the response by the operator. Most companies guarantee a response within one minute. If the response takes too long, press the button on the base unit. Once the operator answers the call from the base unit, ask if there was a call prior to that call. If there wasn't, the battery in the pendant may need to be changed. If the company doesn't answer that call, contact the company by phone and advise a representative that the unit isn't working properly.
