Recycling is actually a very easy thing to do. You simply gather your recyclables and make a drop off at your local recycling center, or you leave your recyclables out with your curbside garbage to be picked up each week. Either way, your reduced waste makes a difference for the environment. And just one household recycling everything that they can would truly make a big difference in the health of the environment. According to Tracy Herring, Supervisor for the City of Round Rock Environmental Services in Round Rock, Texas, "Well above 50% of what you throw away has some type of recycling value to it. There is no reason to throw it in the trash or into the landfill." If every household recycled everything they could, it would make such a great impact on the planet. And every household surely can do this incredibly easy task.

By bringing waste to your local recycling center, you are keeping space free in the already overflowing landfills. Herring explains, "By bringing items to us or putting them in the curbside bin, they have a chance of being recycled or reused." Imagine the difference your household could make by recycling, then imagine what your whole neighborhood could do, your whole city, and so on. Herring also says, "If you can make a difference in the amount of garbage that you actually generate, it makes a world of difference. People don't think one person can make a difference, but they really can."

In addition to recycling, people need to properly dispose of chemicals. Too many people will throw their hazardous wastes into their curbside trash or pour it on the ground or down the drain. That can pollute both the air and the water. Herring says, "One gallon of oil can contaminate a million gallons of drinking water. If oil is not disposed of properly, it hurts the environment. People need to remember anything you pour on the ground eventually will be in your drinking water. That is how the water cycle works." You should always bring hazardous wastes to a local facility so they can be reused, recycled or properly disposed of. This keeps the air and water safe and clean. Almost all recycling centers will not charge you for this service, so there really is no excuse not to do it.

Recycling and reusing not only help the environment by keeping landfills open, but also by reducing the amount of raw materials taken from the earth and the amount of pollution generated when new products are made from scratch. It costs significantly less to recycle items than to generate them from scratch. And, it reduces the amount of air and water pollution that is the end product of most industrial product generation. By recycling just one can, you are helping to make a huge difference in the health of the planet. So, by recycling all that you can, you are helping to save the earth. That is something you can really be proud of.
