Side Effects of Using Seroquel for Insomnia

By Jennifer Eblin

  • Overview

Seroquel is a drug used by doctors to treat bipolar disorder. Due to its qualities, it is also sometimes used to treat those with severe insomnia. However, there are some serious and less serious side effects associated with taking the medication. Not all patients have reported these problems, but they are present in many cases.
  • Resistance

Resistance is one side effect associated with using Seroquel, especially in patients who takes it to treat insomnia. When the pills are first taken, they make people feel sleepy and tired, which is perfect for those with insomnia. This side effect tends to dissipate after several weeks as the body adjusts itself to the medication. After that time has lapsed, the users build up a resistance to the medication and no longer feel tired after taking it.
  • Flu Symptoms

People who take Seroquel often complain of side effects that feel like the flu or a bad cold. Symptoms include experiencing a fever or chills, especially at night. Another common complaint is feeling tired throughout much of the day and not being able to get enough sleep. There are also complaints about sore or stiff joints and muscles, with this continuing even after taking over the counter pain medication. These side effects often persist for several days at a time.

  • Emotional Issues

It is common for people who take Seroquel to often complain about experiencing emotional problems. These are similar to the problems reported by those with bipolar disorder. They may feel ups and downs throughout the day, feeling happy one moment and sad the next. These mood swings can be extreme in some cases. In a small number of cases, those who took the medication claimed to feel long periods of depression and experienced thoughts of suicide. This applies to all patients taking the medication.
  • Internal Problems

Internal problems are another complaint. The most common side effect is nausea and an upset stomach. The pains may be sharp or just a dull throbbing. Some patients have complained about both pains in their stomach and feeling a general aching in the area. There are also some who experienced bouts of constipation while taking Seroquel. It wasn't until they lowered their dosage or stopped taking the medication that this problem stopped completely.
  • Allergic Reactions

There are a handful of side effects associated with Seroquel that indicate an allergic reaction to the medication. Individuals with a reaction complained about a dry red rash on their skin that itched continuously. They also complained about a swelling or their face and tongue. Other side effects of this type include problems breathing and feeling extremely dizzy for long periods of time. Patients experiencing these side effects should stop taking the medication and contact a doctor immediately.
