Silicone bracelets are very durable and can be worn in all types of weather. They are considered a fashion statement because they can contain messages. These can be political, religious, for a good cause or just fun. The bracelets bring awareness to heart disease.
  • Significance

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States (see resources). It is important to educate others on the various types of heart disease and what can be done to prevent them. Most people who wear the bracelet have either suffered from heart disease or had a relative who did.
  • Function

There are two functions of silicone heart disease bracelets: To bring awareness to the cause of heart disease and to raise money for research. The bracelets are also sold to raise money for more research. The bracelets may be made for 40 cents each and then sold for $2. The remaining $1.60 is then put aside for more research.

  • Features

Most silicone heart disease bracelets are featured in the color red, which is associated with the heart and the blood that flows to it. Bracelets have sayings etched on the top, such as "Hope, Faith, Courage, Strength." In between each of these words is an awareness ribbon. Another heart disease bracelet features the words "Go Red" with little hearts all around the bracelet.
  • Costs

Costs vary, depending on where you live and the person doing the fundraising. The bracelets cost between 35 and 50 cents each to make. The bracelets are then sold for $1 to $2 each. The amount sold, minus the cost of production, equals the amount of profit that has been raised to support the cause of heart disease. The more bracelets that are sold, the higher the profit.
  • Sizes

Adult silicone heart disease bracelets are 8 inches around. To find out if the bracelet will fit you, get out a measuring tape and make a fist. Measure around the fattest part of your knuckles. If it is 8 inches or less, the bracelet will fit. If it is just above 8 inches, the bracelet will stretch enough for you to get it on and off.
