They are bad. They are bad and the reason why they are bad is because when you do a full range of motion sit-ups, keeping the feet tight to the floor and actually engages the hip flexors. The first part of the range of motion or the second part and the hip flexors are attached to the spine and they do pull on the back. Crunches don't. So once again it doesn't mean that sit-ups are necessarily bad but it depends on what you are looking for. You need to have a strong and stable back if you are going to do a lot of sit-ups. I tend to prefer to do more crunches for working the ab musculature but even more so than that I like to do things with the fit ball in a different sense like the hip flexion on the ball or arc on the ball. That works the ab in more functional since. I prefer to use those modalities more so than doing sit-ups.
