A good life coach teaches the person how to learn to trust themselves and how to read themselves; how to know when they are acting themselves and to teach a person how to look inside and look honestly. There are some surface skills like integrity or honoring your word. I look at honoring your word isn't necessarily always doing what you say, you are going to do because it is not always possible. If say you are on your way somewhere and you actually have a car accident; well, you are not going to get there when you said you were going to be. Honoring your word is acknowledging what you said and doing it, or acknowledging that you didn't do it. You know, in a way that's not blaming yourself, but just acknowledging your mistakes. I look at people out of integrity when they try to pretend they did not say something or they try to make excuses. As long as you recognize it, you are headed down the right path; you just needed to work on this a little more. And the excuse doesn't matter. Having integrity is being on the phone and letting the person know as soon as you know you are not going to follow through with your word. You are never going to be perfect. Some people think integrity is like always doing what you say you are going do. Well, life isn't really lined up that way, but you can do your best. So it is about being responsible when it does not happen, and taking responsibility.Another skill is being responsible. I think a good life coach teaches the skill of responsibility. This means being responsible for your experience. If you cannot control what happens to you, certainly, you can be responsible for how you respond. I think the real definition of responsibility is being able to respond and acknowledging that you are responsible for how you respond to whatever is happening.
