Social phobias are usually a fear of social situations. People see somebody they would like to talk to and think "they probably don't want to talk to me" or they think that if they go up and talk to the person, there might be asparagus hanging out of their teeth. They are making up images in their minds about things going wrong and consequently feeling the feelings they would feel if that actually happened.

I would teach somebody with a social phobia a technique to make their mind automatically create images of success in a social situation. They need to try to force their minds to think something else. When someone on an airplane is afraid of flying, part of their mind is telling them they'll die while the other part is telling them they'll be fine. Usually, the part of their mind telling them they are fine is doing so in a very stressed tone of voice. There is an internal battle going on that can't lower the stress level. It's very difficult to force your mind through conscious logical thought, but there are techniques that you can use to reverse the thinking of your mind. A powering thought will happen automatically.
